History of the School of Nursing

St. Joseph Hospital officially opened its doors to patients in May 1908.  At the same time, a school for professional nursing was established and in 1910 it graduated the first class of four. The original RN program was discontinued in 1963.

In 1964, St. Joseph School of Nursing reopened as a Practical Nursing program.  The program was in effect until 2013 when it graduated its 52nd and final class of practical nursing students.

In 2005, after studying community needs, St. Joseph School of Nursing established an Associate of Science in Nursing degree program. It has been granted approval by NH Postsecondary Education Commission and is approved by the New Hampshire Board of Nursing.

The ASN program begins in both January and May of each year. The LPN to ASN program for Licensed Practical Nurses begins in May (evenings) and September (days). The ASN program is  approved by the New Hampshire Board of Nursing.  The Associate of Science in Nursing education program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc. (ACEN).

St. Joseph School of Nursing is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC).  The Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency.

Present enrollment in the Associate of Science in Nursing program is approximately 180 students in the freshmen and sophomore classes.
